Understanding Hardship Exceptions

You or your group may submit a Promoting Interoperability Hardship Exception Application, citing one of the following reasons for review and approval:

  • You’re in a small practice
  • You’re using decertified EHR technology
  • You have insufficient Internet connectivity
  • You experienced extreme and uncontrollable circumstances
  • You lack control over the availability of certified EHR

If your hardship exception is approved, your promoting interoperability will be removed from your MIPS score calculations and the 25% will be reallocated to the quality category.
