Understanding the Terminology

Secure messages bear a resemblance to email, but the two are not compatible. You don’t need to understand the technical differences between the two, but it is important to understand some of the terminology that distinguishes secure messages. Below are a few important terms.

direct

The protocol used to send encrypted messages.

direct address

The address other providers can use to send you secure messages. The direct address looks like an email address. Share this address with providers outside of your practice.

HISP address

Health information services provider. This is another name for the direct protocol. Other providers may ask you for your HISP address; this is your direct address.

secure message

An encrypted message sent from a person with a verified security certificate. The message may contain a health-related question or a clinical summary.
