Initiating an ePA on the iPad

An electronic Prior Authorization, also known as an ePA, enables electronic transmission of information between the provider and payer to determine whether or not a prior authorization for a medication is granted. For more information, go to Acquiring Electronic Prior Authorization.

While prescribing a medication for a patient, you may see a PA indicator next to the medication name. This indicates that prior authorization is needed. Rather than exiting the screen you're on, you can queue the ePA so that you can initiate it later. Medications queued for ePA appear under the ePA section of the Rx tab.

To queue an ePA on the iPad

  1. Within the Ocular Exam Room, select the appropriate diagnosis.
  2. Select the Prescription plan.
  3. Locate the medication you want to prescribe by using the list of Popular Prescriptions or by searching.

If a medication requires prior authorization, it will be labeled with a PA indicator.

  4. Select the name of the medication.
  5. Select the Dispensable Drug Name.
  6. Complete any appropriate prescription details.
  7. Tap Save.
  8. Tap Close.

If a medication does require prior authorization, you won't be able to ePrescribe or print the Rx until the prior authorization process is completed.
