FCC Requirements for Messaging

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has established strict guidelines to protect people from spam, scams, and other unsolicited communications. As such, it is imperative that we adhere to these regulations.

When you sign up for EncompassMessage or EPM, we purchase a Toll-Free Number (TFN) on your behalf to send text messages. One of the key requirements is that your practice must have a legitimate, secure (HTTPS) website for verification by carriers. This website serves as proof that your business is real, thereby preventing spam and ensuring messages are not blocked.

TFN Verification Requirements

  • HTTPS Required: The website must use SSL encryption (HTTPS) and have a valid certificate to ensure security.

  • Live & Accessible: The website cannot be under construction or password-protected. It must be fully public and functional.

  • Business Proof: The website must clearly display the business name, services, contact information, and an opt-in process for text messages. This information should not be buried in terms and conditions.

  • Branded Links: The website should use the actual domain in links, rather than generic ones provided by the service provider.

Why It's Needed

  • Carrier Compliance: Carriers block unverified TFNs to stop spam and ensure legitimate businesses use them.

  • Trust & Safety: It helps customers and regulators verify you're a real entity.
