Requirements and Limitations

Before you can use OfficeMate/ExamWRITER on the iPad, you must meet the following requirements.

Requirement Notes

Apple iPad

Any iPad capable of running iPadOS 13 or later.

A soft-tip stylus

A stylus is much more effective than your finger for selecting drop-down menus, check boxes, and radio buttons. Use a stylus with a soft, rubber tip to protect your screen.

Microsoft Remote Desktop, a remote desktop protocol (RDP) app, available from the App Store

Eyefinity tests and supports its products on the iPad with Microsoft Remote Desktop. There are many RDP apps available with varying feature sets and degrees of security. Use only business-grade RDP apps.

Wireless Router

802.11g or better. Enable wireless security.

Security

While not a requirement per se, Eyefinity strongly recommends that you take the following security precautions:

Enable Auto-Lock and Passcode Lock in the General settings

Enable Find My iPad in the iCloud settings.

Terminal Services or
Remote Desktop Services

OfficeMate/ExamWRITER must be running on a server or computer with Terminal Services running and configured.

OfficeMate/ExamWRITER Remote Access License

You must purchase the Remote Access option for your OfficeMate/ExamWRITER license.

The following table lists a few limitations to using OfficeMate/ExamWRITER on an iPad:

Limitation Notes

AirPrint is not supported.

You can print from OfficeMate/ExamWRITER on the iPad only in these situations:

Terminal Services and the iPad are configured on the same network.

The computer you are remoting into is physically attached to a printer.

Some windows may require scrolling.

Due to the iPad’s relatively small screen size and the on-screen keyboard, you will have to swipe to scroll on some windows.

Equipment will not connect to the iPad

The iPad is not designed to interface with diagnostic equipment, barcode scanners, label printers, and other equipment. You may continue to use this equipment if the computer you are remoting into is physically connected to it.

Apple’s Zoom accessibility feature is not compatible with RDP apps.

If you have enabled the Zoom feature in the iPad’s settings, you will need to disable it. It interferes with some of the three-finger swipe gestures required in the RDP app.

The iPad name cannot contain an apostrophe

By default Apple gives the iPad a name like “Pat’s iPad.” OfficeMate/ExamWRITER cannot run on any device with an apostrophe in its name. To change the name of the iPad, perform the following steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Select About.
  4. Select Name.
  5. Enter a new name or remove the apostrophe and tap Done.
