Setting Up the Topcon Interface
- You must set up the Topcon CL, KR, and RM interface from the computer connected to the Topcon equipment.
- In the ExamWRITER main window, click Tools, select Equipment Integration Setup, and select Equipment Interface Setup.
The Eyefinity Equipment Interface Setup window opens.
- Click Add.
- Select the Topcon manufacturer and a Topcon device:
- CL Devices (Lensmeter): Use this for a Topcon CL equipment interface.
- ARK Devices (Auto Refractor Keratometer): Use this for a Topcon KR equipment interface (except the KR-7000).
- KR-7000: Use this for a Topcon KR-7000 equipment interface.
Currently, you must use a Topcon digital refraction system to enable a Topcon RM device to interact with ExamWRITER.
- Click Add.
The settings and options appear.
- (Optional) Enter a Device Nickname.

Follow the instructions for your device:
Device Instructions Serial Port Connection for
- CL Devices (Lensmeter)
- ARK Devices (Auto Refractor Keratometer)
- KR-7000 (Auto Refractor Keratometer)
- Select the Use Serial Port option.
- From the Select COM Port drop-down list, select a communication port number. The default is 1.
- From the Select Baud Rate drop-down list, select a baud rate.
Non-Serial Port Connection for
- CL Devices (Lensmeter)
- ARK Devices (Auto Refractor Keratometer)
- KR-7000 (Auto Refractor Keratometer)
- Select the File Capture or Test File option.
- Click Browse, and select the location where the test file are copied.
- In the File Prefix field, enter the data file’s beginning characters .
- From the File Extension drop-down list, select the data file’s ending characters (extension).
KR-800S (Auto Refractor)
- Click Browse, and select the folder configured in the Topcon equipment where the files are saved.
- From the File Extension drop-down list, select the data file’s ending characters (extension).
- KR-800S (Auto Refractor)
- KR-800PA (Auto Refractor)
- Click Browse, and select the folder configured in the Topcon equipment where you send data measurements and reports.
- (Optional) Click Test to verify that you can connect to the Topcon equipment.
- Click Save.
- Repeat steps 2–8 for each piece of Topcon equipment that you use.
If you use the KR-800PA, you must set up the Review KR800PA (Image Manager) to review imported topography images.
- Close the Eyefinity Equipment Interface Setup window.
If you use ExamWRITER 12 and installed the new Eyefinity Equipment Interface (see Installing the Equipment Interface), do not follow this procedure. Instead, see Setting Up the Topcon Interface.
- In the ExamWRITER main window, click Tools, select Equipment Integration Setup, and select Equipment Interface Setup.
The Equipment Interfaces - Setup window opens.
- To record data received from Topcon in a file for debugging purposes, select the Debugging mode/Write to file checkbox.
- Select the checkboxes next to the equipment interfaces that you are setting up:
- Topcon CL Devices: Use this for a Topcon CL equipment interface
- Topcon ARK Devices: Use this for a Topcon KR equipment interface (except the KR-7000)
- Topcon KR-7000: Use this for the Topcon KR-7000 equipment interface
Currently, you must use a Topcon digital refraction system to enable a Topcon RM device to interact with ExamWRITER.
- From the Data Source drop-down list, select one of the following options:
- If you are connecting this computer to the Topcon equipment with a serial cable:
- Select Port.
- From the Comm Port drop-down list, select a communication port number. The Comm Port default is 1.
- If you are not connecting this computer to the Topcon equipment with a serial cable:
- Select File.
- In the Data File Start Chars field, enter the data file’s beginning characters.
- From the Data File End Char drop-down list, select the data file’s ending characters (extension).
Steps b and c specify the start and end characters of data source files and identify specific files from which the interface is importing data.
- If you are connecting this computer to the Topcon equipment with a serial cable:
- Click Save.
- Click Exit.
- Close and reopen ExamWRITER to activate your changes.
