Preparing for ICD-10 Updates—October 1

On October 1 (or the first day of business after October 1), complete the following tasks:

  • Review clinical decision support templates
    • In ExamWRITER, click Tools and select Clinical Decision Support Setup [MU]. Select a condition and verify that the ICD-10 codes are current. Add any new ICD-10 codes that are applicable to the condition and remove any retired codes. Repeat this process for each clinical decision support template.
There is a character limit on the Diagnosis Codes text box. If you run out of room while adding ICD-10 codes, save the clinical decision support template, create a new template with the same criteria, and enter the rest of your ICD-10 codes.
  • Record patient exams and fee slips using ICD-10 codes
    • In ExamWRITER, use one of the following methods to record patient exams using the latest ICD-10 codes. (You must manually select the appropriate ICD-10 codes so that your insurance claims are not rejected.)
      • Create new blank exams.
      • Copy forward existing patients’ previous exams to create new exams. Any retired diagnoses will be flagged as blue text in the exam so that you can manually recode them with a current ICD-10 code before billing the exam.
      • Use an existing template to create new exams. Any retired diagnoses will be flagged as blue text in the exam so that you can manually recode them with a current ICD-10 code before billing the exam.
Certain retired codes, including J82 and R51, are not flagged as blue text when the copy forward or existing template methods are used. Eyefinity is working to fix this known issue in a future release.
    • In OfficeMate, record fee slips with the latest ICD-10 codes. The ICD codes available to select in the Fee Slip window will be based on the date of service. (You must manually select the appropriate ICD-10 codes so that your insurance claims are not rejected.)
