Publishing Your Digital Contact Information

Although publishing your digital contact information is not required to participate in MIPS, adding your direct (secure messaging) address to the NPPES directory makes it easier for other clinicians to find your direct address. Other clinicians need your direct address to exchange clinical data with you securely. The more providers who publish their direct addresses, the more useful the directory will be.

As part of the 21st Century Cures Act, CMS is required to establish a national directory of provider digital contact information to improve interoperability and records portability. In service of that mandate, CMS is asking providers to add their direct addresses to NPPES (National Plan and Provider Enumeration System). To encourage providers to publish their digital contact information, CMS will publish a list of noncomplient providers.

To add your digital contact information to the NPPES directory, follow these steps:

  1. Go to nppes.cms.hhs.gov and login.
  2. Select a provider from the list.
  3. Click the Health Information Exchange tab.
  4. Click the Endpoint Type drop-down menu and select Direct Messaging Address.
  5. Click the Endpoint text box and enter your direct (secure messaging) address.

Do not enter a personal or work email address. This must be your direct address used for secure messaging.

  6. Click the Endpoint Location drop-down menu and select your practice location.
  7. Locate the Is the Endpoint Affiliated to another Organization? radio buttons and select the appropriate option:
    • Select the Yes radio button if this direct address was issued by another practice or hospital instead of location you selected in step 7.
    • Select the No radio button if this direct address was issued by the practice you selected in step 7.
  8. Select the Terms and Conditions to acknowledge your agreement.
  9. Click Save.

Repeat steps 2–9 for all providers at your practice.

The deadline CMS gave providers to publish their digital contact information on NPPES was June 30, 2020. As of the publication of this page, CMS has not published a list of noncompliant providers. We do not know when CMS will publish the list or how often it will be updated once it is published.
