Managing Preferences
This topic explains how to manage preferences in the ExamWRITER ePrescribing interface.
Administrators can modify ExamWRITER ePrescribing interface locationwide practice preferences, including Patient Advisor preferences. Modifications that you make to these preferences affect all users, regardless of their own user preferences.
- Open the ExamWRITER ePrescribing interface. For more information, go to Opening the ExamWRITER ePrescribing Interface.
- Select Settings from the menu in the upper-left corner.
- Click Preferences.
- Under the Location menu, click the links to manage preferences.
- Click Save when finished.
Location Preference Options Alerts General Alert Preferences - Allow providers to supress duplicate clinical alerts for 1 year Specify whether to allow providers to suppress duplicate clinical alerts for one year after they have already been viewed. General Alert Preferences - Duplicate therapy check against External Medication History (120 days)
Specify whether to use a patient’s medication drug history to check for duplicate therapy. The medication drug history includes prescription refills within the past 120 days if available. We recommend that you select Yes.

Specify whether to use a patient’s medication drug history to check for drug-drug interactions. The medication drug history includes prescription refills within the past 120 days if available. We recommend that you select Yes.
Drug-allergy interactions
Select the drug-allergy interactions to display. You can customize this option via the alerts tab in the Settings menu.
Geriatric warnings
Select the geriatric precaution warnings to be display.
Drug-diagnosis interactions
Select the drug-diagnosis interactions to display. You can customize this option via the alerts tab in the Settings menu.
Pediatric warnings:
Select the pediatric precaution warnings to be display.
Drug-drug interactions
Select the drug-drug interactions to display. You can customize this option via the alerts tab in the Settings menu.
When a user overrides prescription warnings Select the action to take if a user overrides prescription warnings. Allergy Enable "Allergy Severity" Specify whether you want to enable the allergy severity feature. Application Allow partial date for medication start, allergy onset, and diagnosis onset Specify whether you want to allow partial start dates in medication and allergy records. Allow providers to manage their provider agents.

Include enterprise name with location name Specify whether you want to display the enterprise name in the patient status bar at the top of the window (only for enterprise practices). Diagnosis Supported diagnosis codes
Specify whether to display problems using SNOMED CT, ICD-10, or ICD-9 codes.
Medication Retain office comments and directions to Pharmacist when renewing/prescribing a medication
Specify whether to retain previous notes to the pharmacist and staff on renewals and new prescriptions.
Default external medication history range Select the number of days to use in your medication drug history searches. We recommend that you select Over Last 90 Days. Allow incomplete drug definition Specify whether you want to include incomplete drugs in medications. Allow specifying medication history source Specify whether you want to use the medication history source. Enable "Quick Add" without medication details Specify whether you want to enable the "Quick Add" button and allow medications to be quickly added without medication details. Patient Enable Transition of Care logging Specify whether you want to display the Encounter - Today icon to record a patient’s transition-of-care date. Include Transition of Care and encounter data in EMR/PMS interface data Specify whether you want to send updated office encounter and transition of care information to ExamWRITER. Select first prescription benefit option by default Specify whether you want to select the first prescription benefit option by default. Label prefix for patient External ID If you entered a patient or external ID that you want to display on all prescriptions and reports in the preference above, enter the label that you want to use for the ID. System name of patient External ID to display on prescriptions and reports Enter the patient or external ID that you want to display on all prescriptions and reports. This feature is typically not used by smaller practices. System name required to enter patient External ID Enter the identifier used to link Rcopia to ExamWRITER. This identifier is necessary if you add new patients directly in the ExamWRITER ePrescribing interface. Patient Advisor Enable adherence plans
Specify whether you want to use the Patient Advisor toolbar to allow prescribers to see medication adherence plans when they are available. For more information, go to Using the Patient Advisor Toolbar.
Enable electronic Prior Authorization (ePA)
Specify whether you want to use the Patient Advisor toolbar to allow prescribers to see patient education material and/or support programs when available. If you do not allow prescribers to see medication adherence plans when they are available, you will not see patient education material and/or support programs in the Patient Advisor toolbar because the toolbar will not be visible. Patient education will be available in other areas of the ExamWRITER ePrescribing interface, though. For more information, go to Using the Patient Advisor Toolbar.
Prescription Allow prescriptions to be saved as pending without sig and quantity Specify whether you want to allow prescriptions to be generated and saved without including sig or quantity data. This feature is helpful for staff members because sometimes they do not know the sig and when this feature is turned on, they can still create and send prescriptions to the physician's queue for approval. We recommend that you select Yes. Allow a provider to approve a prescription without entering a signature password (Certain states require signature passwords to be used as part of the electronic prescribing process; please refer to your state rules prior to disabling this feature.) Specify whether you want to allow a provider to approve a prescription without entering a signature password. Enable Patient Notifications via SMS text Specify whether you want to enable patient notifications via SMS text. Auto-set medication stop date based on prescription duration Specify whether you want to automatically discontinue an active medication when the duration expires. If you select Yes, medications will automatically be moved to the patient’s history. Populate sig fields from previous prescriptions ('sticky' feature) Specify whether to use the "sticky" feature and populate sig fields from previous prescriptions. Enable prescription controls on the Review Prescription screen Specify whether you want to add the “Action” buttons to the Review Prescription window. Require provider to sign prescriptions printed by staff Specify whether you want to require the provider’s signature on printed prescriptions. Include link to drug information reference site on prescribe screen (not affiliated with DrFirst) Specify whether you want to see links to ePocrates. You must have a license to access this website. Prescription security features note to include on printed prescriptions (max 100 chars) Enter any additional security features that you want to include on printed prescriptions. Custom additional directions to patient (one per line) Enter custom prescription notes to patients that will be available to select while prescribing medications. The note has no length limitation. Do not press Enter while entering a note; let the text wrap. Press Enter to distinguish between individual notes. Custom pharmacist notes (one per line) Enter custom pharmacist notes that will be available to select while prescribing medications. The note has no length limitation. Do not press Enter while entering a note; let the text wrap. Press Enter to distinguish between individual notes. Custom prescription comments (one per line) Enter custom prescription comments that will be available to select while prescribing medications. The note has no length limitation. Do not press Enter while entering a note; let the text wrap. Press Enter to distinguish between individual notes. Print clinical and formulary warnings on printed/faxed prescriptions Specify whether you want to automatically include any drug and allergy interaction and exclusion warnings on all printed and faxed prescriptions. See pending and undeliverable prescriptions across all of your locations Specify whether you want to view orders pending/undeliverable in other locations when reporting pending/undeliverable prescriptions for a patient. Prescription Management Default pending prescription box to checked Specify whether if you want to check all pending prescriptions on the pending prescriptions report. We recommend that you select No so that physicians must choose the prescriptions that they want to approve and do not accidentally approve another physician's prescriptions. Show complete comments on reports Specify whether you want to display office comments on all reports. Show patient’s responsible provider on reports Specify whether you want to automatically display the primary care provider, if available, on all reports. Show pharmacy name on reports Specify whether you want to display the pharmacy name on all reports. Miscellaneous Remember signature password for Select the duration, in minutes, that the signature password should remain active. We recommend that you select None so that a signature password is required at all times and proper credentials are always used. Prescription Favorites Enable Practice Favorites List Specify whether to enable the practice favorites list. Select the user allowed to modify the list. For more information, go to Managing Favorite Prescriptions. Enable Location Favorites List Specify whether to enable the location favorites list. Select the user allowed to modify the list. For more information, go to Managing Favorite Prescriptions. Enable User Personal Favorites Specify whether to enable the user favorites list. For more information on managing favorites, go to Managing Favorite Prescriptions. Enable Recently Prescribed Display Specify whether to enable the recently prescribed display.
You can modify ExamWRITER ePrescribing interface user preferences, including custom prescription notes.
- Open the ExamWRITER ePrescribing interface. For more information, go to Opening the ExamWRITER ePrescribing Interface.
- Select Settings from the menu in the upper-left corner.
- Click Preferences.
- Under the User menu, click the links to manage preferences.

User Preference Options Navigation Always start on
Select which window appears when the ExamWRITER ePrescribing interface opens. We recommend that you select Patient Search.
Pharmacy Default pharmacy list to search
Select the default pharmacy list to use during searches. We recommend that you select All Lists. For more information on searching for pharmacies, go to Selecting a Default Pharmacy.
Medication Hide inactive medications older than Select the default time limit for inactive medications to appear in a patient’s medical history report. Ask to reconcile prescription vs. medication when only quantity has changed Specify whether to reconcile the prescription when only the quantity has changed. Prescription Populate sig fields from previous prescriptions (“sticky” feature) Specify whether to populate sig fields from previous prescriptions and use the “sticky” feature. Display patient allergies on printed/faxed prescription Specify whether to display patient allergies on printed and faxed prescriptions.
