ExamWRITER ONC Certification Update
Eyefinity intends to withdraw ExamWRITER from ONC certification in May 2027. ExamWRITER itself is not going away, nor are features often associated with MIPS, like the patient portal or secure messaging. This change only affects MIPS participation and reporting.
If uninterrupted access to a certified EHR is important for your practice, we recommend having a solution in place by the end of 2026, so your 2027 MIPS reporting isn't disrupted. The EHR capabilities in Eyefinity Encompass are fully certified and integrate directly with OfficeMate so your billing, scheduling, and patient data stay connected.
What do you want to do?
Starting in May 2027, ExamWRITER will no longer carry ONC certification. As a result, you won’t be able to use ExamWRITER as your certified EHR for MIPS participation and reporting. The 2026 performance year is the last year you can use ExamWRITER to participate in and report your MIPS performance.
This change in certification status does not change ExamWRITER functionality, development, or support outside of MIPS participation. ExamWRITER will continue to run and you will still have access to the regulatory and clinical features you rely on, including the following:
This change also does not affect patient-facing features in ExamWRITER, like the patient portal and secure messaging.
This change matters only if your practice needs a certified EHR to meet MIPS requirements. If you do not report MIPS, this change does not affect you.
If you’re unsure whether you’re required to participate in MIPS, check your status using the CMS Quality Payment Program participation tool. Enter your practice’s NPI to view participation status by performance year.
If your practice requires a certified EHR for MIPS reporting, plan now so you can make a decision and transition at a sustainable pace.
- 2025 and 2026 performance years. You can still file MIPS reports in ExamWRITER for these performance years.
- By December 31, 2026. Recommended target date to have a different certified EHR solution in place to support uninterrupted 2027 reporting.
- May 2027. Planned ONC certification withdrawal date for ExamWRITER.
If you do not onboard to a new certified EHR by the end of 2026, you will need to use a data unification service to collate your MIPS reporting data in 2027.
If you are required to report MIPS and do not submit required data, your Medicare payment adjustment may be negative (up to -9%), depending on performance and submission.
If you need a certified EHR for MIPS in 2027, you have options. Eyefinity will support your transition either way.
